December 2010
Not sad to see 2010 go.
But it was a good year, too. Nothing to complain about, lots more to hope for when midnight rolls around.
As for what I’m doing tonight, I haven’t a clue and that’s OK. I’ll improvise.
EDSBS: A NOTE ON GAMEDAY FASHION →
Real simple: if you’re a neutral, don’t wear your team’s gear where they’re not playing. Everyone will and should hate you.

ESPN: Five suspended Buckeyes to stay for senior... →
Jim Tressel essentially extracted promises to stay in exchange to play in the Sugar Bowl — a game whose CEO admitted to pretty much lobbying for their suspensions not to apply so it would be attractive to watch and attend.
This is why the NCAA needs to get its shit together. Run your own damn postseason and figure out your rules (whilst getting rid of the dumb ones).
Also, that was foul...

– Brandon Lloyd, one of the few Broncos worth a damn this year, on what he would say to the teams (49ers, Bears, Redskins) that gave up on him now that he’s a Pro Bowler. Speaking for every person who’s been canned multiple times and is doing better now.

The question really isn’t so much about the impending divorce as much as it is how he found someone to marry him in the first place.

I don’t think Carlson really believes half of the things he says; I’m pretty sure he says stuff like this to get attention.
Which one is worse? Not sure I would want to decide.
First resolution for the New Year.
I resolve to send Christmas cards next year. It seems like a great way to acknowledge nice people in your life without having to buy gifts. Also, I have friends who pick or make very cool cards and I think I could do that well too.
NYT: Deepwater Horizon's Final Moments →
Really incredible article and video. This is how a multimedia approach to journalism should work.

taking in a stray during the holidays.
Last night, I found myself in the West Hills at the request of a co-worker and her husband. These sort of invites are both nice and nerve-wracking: nice because they obviously think well of me, but nerve-wracking because I’m the outsider at a family dinner.
It’s an interesting environment to be part of and observe more rather than talk. I left feeling a bit empty, not through any...

Meanwhile, in fake academia...
I fail to see what the problem is with Ohio State players selling commemorative gear in exchange for cash that a student with any other type of scholarship could earn. (Note that the NCAA’s inconsistency in punishment is still an issue.)
I have a cold and it's two days until Christmas.
Screw this holiday season. I’d rather just wrap myself up in bed and not come out until this stuffy nose and heavy head go away.

I’m not sure what the most depressing part of this list is: that Carlos Santana will rape any classic rock song in an attempt to get back on the charts, that the dude from Staind is pretending to be a hick, that we had the first prominent and bad cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” that Godsmack & Train still exist, bands like Salem are getting critical...

I think the reason why I’m so curious about Doyle’s campaign and find it captivating (so much so that I can’t help but read anything I come across about it, whether that be on Salon or what have you) is primarily because it taps into a real-life problem and fear that is utterly alien to me, in a direct sense — and purely because I’m a straight, WASP-ish dude.

Barney Frank completely pwns hapless CNS reporter attempting ‘gotcha’ DADT question | Crooks and Liars
Sometimes it’s easy to make a politician look foolish. Barney Frank is not one of those politicians whom you can make look foolish. Also not one to be trifled with.

To be fair, I’ve rarely made a habit of reading the Vows column in the NYT — the last time I did was when my cousin the Hill staffer got hitched and Dad sent the link — so the Internet outrage about this particular column hit me a couple of days late.
I get why the NYT would find it fascinating, but I really do want to know why the reporter didn’t get the jilted exes whose...

We’re gonna have to agree with Balk on this: no Steely Dan in the best 100 songs by Jews is reason enough to dismiss the list.

food processor questions.
So I have $50 for Fred Meyer from work (Xmas gift) and am trying to decide what to spend it on. One option is a food processor. I need one. But the decision is kind of between a Cuisinart/KitchenAid mini-processor, a full-size processor, or a Magic Bullet. I know people who swear by the Magic Bullets but there are concerns about the blades.
Opinions, anyone?

things I could cook this week.
Macaroni and cheese from scratch
Chicken cutlets
Spaghetti carbonara
Shrimp scampi
Penne with sausage and cream
Fried egg and bacon sandwiches
Not gonna lie. Kinda excited. The only downside to finding stress relief and joy in cooking is that you really do need more people to share it with.

holiday party time.
It’s always held at our main anchor’s pad, and always packed. Should be good times. There’s always a bartender from Huber’s there to serve Spanish coffees and do fire tricks with them.
