What happened to CNN? →
In 1991, I sat glued to the television watching Bernie Shaw and Peter Arnett broadcast from a hotel room in Baghdad while the city was being bombed. At that moment, I thought CNN was the most incredible thing that had happened in my entire life. Time magazine went on to name Ted Turner Person of the Year, in no small part because of that broadcast. This weekend, I am traveling. Cairo is...

a question for Guy Fieri.
Why the hell would you spend all that time grilling up good steak, peppers, cheese, etc. just to put them on freaking Ritz crackers? Oh. Right. Because it’s an ad you did for money and you’re a hack. (Seriously, that is really lousy finger food.)

Taco Bell is trying to sell a Barbacoa burrito.
In the wake of the whole seasoned ground beef lawsuit, I wish them luck in trying to steal and make worse a burrito that every half-decent Mexican place you know of has already done a better job with (even Chipotle had one from the get-go!)

If you have a mobile version of your site, it should be a priority to make links automatically re-direct to said mobile version if you can identify the access coming from a mobile network.

the bizarre things Windows does.
So I have my computer back but something’s off. When I open a browser window it says I have an unsecured connection, that all of the certificates being sent through my internet connection have expired or not yet activated. Mentally, I think “Wrong dates?” I look at the time in the corner, and it’s off by quite a few hours. Open up the panel, and the computer thinks...

David Gregory, con't.
Dude and his staff are tweeting about how they’re using TweetDeck (which I love as a program, BTW) to track the situation in Egypt with the former ambassador to Israel. 1) Why are we always using ambassadors to Israel for context about Arab revolutions? Must the frame always be about Jerusalem? 2) Instead of using a social media app to show you’re with it, I have a better idea....

For anyone watching Meet The Press
winstonwolfe: peterfeld: David Gregory personifies the death of network broadcast news. Agree 1000%. My Dad(77 years old) has been watching the Sunday morning news shows for as long as they have been on. He believes Gregory is one of the worst “newsmen” that has ever been on. I was never a big Tim Russert fan because he seemed really noxious toward anyone who wasn’t really in the...

Now, El Niño shall walk alone.
Fernando Torres filed a transfer request, requesting Liverpool negotiate with Chelsea toward the end of the transfer window. Of course, the club has rejected it and with good reason. More often than not, I am sympathetic to player before club, even when my own rooting interests are involved, and particularly when the club appears to have secured a logical replacement in Ajax’s Luis Suarez. But...

At no point in your rambling, incoherent responses were either of you close to anything resembling a rational thought. I am now dumber for having listened to them. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your souls. (To be fair I feel like the principal in Billy Madison after every SOTU response no matter which party gives it.)

irony much?
So we have a lot of email groups at work. I’m sure you do too. Anyway, someone griped about receiving an email or two and asked to remove a certain group from the list via email reply. Of course, she used the “reply all” function, as did the person who seconded her gripe. Technology helps us find new and embarrassing ways to display our lack of awareness.

inthefade: What is happening to the music industry? Basic thought: this is the number of folks dedicated enough as a fan base to buy a CD in the early weeks of its release. That’s a base cultivated over more than a decade. The real metric now is that Spears number on downloaded singles, but people are picking and choosing — those are casual fans. This is where the industry has been...

Why Keith Olbermann Is Out At MSNBC →
mediaite: The sudden, massive story of the night:  MSNBC’s longtime star, Keith Olbermann, stunned Countdown viewers at the end of Friday’s show by announcing it was his last at the network.  Now, the drive is on to determine why he’s out of a job. Again, Occam’s Razor seems to win the day.

Really a poor choice in song for a Friday night...
The iPod went for the Smiths’ “I Know It’s Over.” “If you’re so very good-looking, then why do you sleep alone tonight? I know cos tonight is just like any other night. That’s why you’re on your own tonight with your triumphs and your charms while they’re in each other’s arms.” Ouch, you little machine. And yet the grief is so...

Something I'm considering next month.
Taking the month off from booze. Not for any reason other than I feel sapped out and could benefit from a general detox of any sort of intoxicants. The problem is that there’s a station party to celebrate the good stuff we did last year on February 5th — it’s at Grand Central Bowl; the food and alcohol are free and I will show up anywhere if you say you’re paying for my...

That said about Olbermann...
…I’m not gonna miss him too much. I was a big fan early on but tuned out a few years ago. I thought he became consumed with the petty squabbling with Fox News/O’Reilly, so much so he even started to sound like those he despised. I find Rachel Maddow a better fit, and maybe it’s because my taste has changed. I prefer letting one’s target hang himself with the right...

on Keith Olbermann's departure from MSNBC.
There are plenty of theories you can put to it, including: 1) Comcast wanted him gone. Watch this one gain steam among the more conspiracy-minded. 2) His blustery style didn’t fit with MSNBC’s latest programming tilt and strategy. (Not likely, considering Ed Schultz is louder.) 3) He’s just notoriously difficult to work with. Based on past precedent, I’d go with 3...

Sure, putting GE’s CEO in charge of a commission on jobs seems rather problematic at the very least. The more disturbing thought is that President Obama really will need to raise a billion dollars for the 2012 presidential campaign post-Citizens United. We’re about to cross a really unpleasant line in the way we handle elections.

the divine Ms. M.
Four years ago I was producing an 11 pm newscast in coastal town California when a production assistant I’d never seen before came up to me with a graphic list I’d printed about an hour ago and said, “Hi, my name is M. What the hell does this mean?” She was (and still is) effortlessly cute in a newsroom where women always go more for “pretty.” Three weeks...
