I still hate clubbing in LA.
Too loud, too expensive ($9 for a basic cocktail) and little payoff if chasing random women isn’t your thing. It’s stimulation overload without the escape of decent conversation.

– Jeffrey Toobin in the New Yorker, on Attorney General Eric Holder’s chance at a real legacy by protecting the basic voting rights of Americans. (via thethirdshift) I wrote a paper on (yeah, sorry, this is how it goes) the history of black voting rights this past semester, and I learned or...

Obama's Robot Army -- Ta-Nehisi Coates  →
The problem with drones is that they’re merely another way to shift the burden of war so Americans don’t have to feel it. That burden then becomes the tragedy of the families whose loved ones are the unintended casualties in those strikes.

I only post this link to note that this is probably the first time I’ve seen the term “heteroflexible” in a headline; it’s one my friends and I were using a decade ago.

Little red card: why China fails at football  →
Was referred to this piece in the Economist by SI writer Grant Wahl’s Twitter feed. Worth a read, even though it’s a couple of weeks old.

Here’s the Toobin piece in full. Pasting a link on the mobile Tumblr app isn’t easy.

Coworker: Hey Mel, you know that song All I Want For Christmas Is You?
Mel: From Love Actually?
Coworker: Yeah, I think it's destined to become a Christmas classic.
Mel: Mmm.
Coworker: Do you want me to play it for you?
Mel: Um, I'm knee-deep in an interview about black holes right now.
Coworker: So I'm guessing that would be a no.

treat yo self.
That’s what Day 3 of vacation was all about. My mother is a member of the Los Angeles Athletic Club, so it was about working out, the sauna, and a massage. The club is on Olive and 7th in downtown, and it’s one of the nicest gyms I’ve been in. The machines allow you to plug iPods in, the free weights are top notch, and there’s a training staff on hand to work out kinks...

– The Breeders, “Cannonball” (via wentdog) I will have a crush on Kim and Kelley Deal until I die. They made me fall in love with and think it was cool for women to play in bands. At 12 years old, that’s a good impression to have.

it's a status thing.
I mean, I am such a cog that I don’t have business cards and I’ve been at this station nearly three years, which is the time I spent at my last station and I had business cards there — in fact, I had to re-order once when the logo changed. If you ever want to know the difference between market #121 and market #22, that’s it — you can be an ordinary, everyday line...
