The fact of the matter is, I think people would have been happy to have a referendum on civil rights rather than fighting and dying in the streets in the South.

New Jersey governor Chris Christie, saying he’ll veto any bill the state legislature passes to legalize same-sex marriage, saying it should be passed by voter referendum and using a lousy analogy to do it.

Sure, white Southerners would have happily voted to give black people voting rights in the 1960s! Idiot.

There’s a bigger problem here, though: legislators are elected by the people (ostensibly), but now apparently it’s not enough that democratically elected representatives pass bills legalizing same-sex marriage; now the voting electorate has to legitimize it too, as if the general populace should have a say in who gets equal rights and who doesn’t.
